GIF images (.gif)

GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. The format allows palette of up to 256 distinct colors. It also supports animations and transparency. The limited palette makes this format unsuitable for reproducing color photographs and other images with continuous color, but it is well-suited for simpler images such as logos with solid areas of color for the web.
