Rich Text Format is a standard formalised by Microsoft Corporation for specifying formatting of documents. RTF files are actually ASCII files with special commands to indicate formatting information, such as fonts and margins. Rtf documents can be viewed in a number of programs including Microsoft Word and Notepad and can be interpreted across platforms.
