Management of bonded asbestos in schools

It is Department of Education and the Arts policy to remove asbestos products as a priority from schools should they deteriorate and represent a possible health threat.

State schools in Queensland have a Building Management Plan (BMP) which includes details about the location of asbestos products in the school.

The BMP includes a process that must be followed for working with asbestos products.

Building and repair contractors must check the BMP before undertaking any work in a school.

Should an asbestos product (such as fibro wall or ceiling sheeting) be disturbed, the area is isolated from students and/or teachers until repairs are completed, and appropriate cleaning and air monitoring is conducted to clear the area for reoccupation.

Parents are advised by the Principal of actions taken.
