What is asbestos and how was it used? > What is being done to remove asbestos from schools? >

Air monitoring and dust testing

If an asbestos building product in a school is disturbed, students and teachers are removed from the area and cannot reoccupy that area until a clearance is given by accredited specialists.

Testing is conducted as a matter of course when there has been a disturbance of an asbestos building product. This testing can also be carried out when a concern about the possibility of the presence of asbestos is expressed by a teacher or student.

If the test confirms the presence of asbestos, thorough professional cleaning and air monitoring is conducted to ensure the area is safe for reoccupation.

Each month a list will be available detailing schools that have been tested for asbestos dust as confirmed by Department of Public Works.
