What is asbestos and how was it used? >

What is being done to remove asbestos from schools?

The Queensland Government has committed $120 million to replace asbestos-based roof sheeting in all state schools.

An audit of state schools by the Department of Public Works has found there are some 930 asbestos roofs to be replaced under the ARRP.

The Government plans to replace these roofs as quickly as possible. On 17 January, 2007, Education and Training Minister, Rod Welford, said:

'Another 132 asbestos roofs at 70 state schools throughout Queensland will be replaced during 2007.

'The availability of skilled trades people and fine weather has made it possible to continue to accelerate the replacement program.

'We are on target to pass the 800 mark in the replacement program by the end of June, weather permitting. This will be more than 85% of all the roofs scheduled for replacement.'
