Overview

In 2008, National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) will be held from 1-7 September.

The theme for NLNW 2008 is Partnerships in Learning. Across Australia parents, teachers and communities are working together to develop the literacy and numeracy skills of Australia's young people.

Literacy and numeracy are fundamental skills that are critically important to Australia's future prosperity and position in the world. The promotion of strong literacy and numeracy skills amongst young people assists in countering educational and social disadvantage.

NLNW is an Australian Government initiative, run in collaboration with State and Territory Governments, which aims to:

showcase the hard work school communities are undertaking in improving literacy and numeracy skills
raise community awareness of the importance of all Australian students developing effective literacy and numeracy skills
build on national initiatives to improve literacy and numeracy standards among young Australians

NLNW 2008 Partnerships in Learning Queensland

The three education authorities in Queensland have a long history of collaboration on educational projects and issues.

NLNW has been one these since its inception in 1999 and once again in 2008 all teachers and school leaders across all phases in all sectors are invited to participate in NLNW activities.

There are a number of ways to be involved in NLNW 2008 Queensland activities and these include:

organising and participating in local schools events
applying for a School Celebration grant to support local activities
appointing local literacy and numeracy ambassadors at individual schools
applying for a School Cluster Grant to conduct professional development
collaborating to apply for a Regional/Diocesan /ISQ grant to conduct professional development
attending the State Conference on Friday 5 September 2008
participating in and / or have students participate in national activities such as Reach for the Stars or National Reading Day or Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards
