Criteria

The award program recognises employees who have consistently performed demanding jobs to the highest standards and have made a major contribution to the Australian community.

The sole criterion for the award of the Public Service Medal (PSM) is outstanding public service.

'Outstanding service' shown through:

• ongoing service excellence to the public
• innovation in program, project and policy development
• service above and beyond the normal requirements of the position, and
• a special achievement or success in the performance of duty in difficult or unusual circumstances.

Long service should not be used as a basis for making nominations.
