The New Basics Project was undertaken by Education Queensland to prepare our students for the future. It dealt with new student identities, new economies and workplaces, new technologies, diverse communities and complex cultures.
The New Basics aimed to improve the learning outcomes of our students. Community members, teachers and students worked together to ensure that the richness and relevance of students' academic and social growth was enhanced.
In 2003, schools throughout Queensland completed a four-year trial of the New Basics. Those 38 schools (and a selection of "like" schools not engaged in the Trial) were the subject of an extensive research program. The report of that research is now available.
In 2008, some schools continue to enact Rich Tasks from the original New Basics triad as curriculum organisers for the implementation of the QCAR Framework in Years 1 - 9 (see diagram below). In addition, numerous schools are developing and enacting (and validating standards in) tasks based on Blueprints. Blueprints are innovative curriculum, assessment and pedagogy frames that aim to maintain the intellectual rigour and real-world connectedness of Rich Tasks while allowing teachers greater flexibility in selecting curriculum content and the medium of assessable products.
