Pedagogy Alignment Tool

How can teachers align their pedagogy with curriculum and assessment in their classroom?

What happens in a classroom where these three "message systems" are aligned is a complex, changing thing. However, a simplified map of this territory can be used to identify directions and key points. The Pedagogy Alignment Tool has been designed to help teachers produce this kind of map for particular tasks (not necessarily Rich Tasks).

It allows teachers to make explicit connections between particular facets of the productive pedagogies and particular elements of a task they are planning to implement; for example, "Higher-order thinking will be evident in this element of the task, and it will look like this. Knowledge integration will be required in the task in this way." It is intended to be used for one task at a time.

The result may be a simplification, but as an auditing approach it has proved illuminating.

The alignment tool is available as a Word document, in both A3 (new window) 44k Microsoft® Word document and A4 (new window) 44k Microsoft® Word document format (the one you use may depend on your printer). A partially completed example (new window) 44k Microsoft® Word document is also available, based on the Suite 1 Rich Task, "Webpage Design" (new window) 231k Adobe PDF document.
