While the main thrust of this site is to promote Australia, part of this promotion is of Australian inventions, such as a prawn peeler and crocodile pegs. The site has catalogues of Australian products in many categories, which will enable children to see what is already on the market. A chess set with sailors in winter and summer uniforms, for example, is shown under toys.
Excel spreadsheets

This site is useful for satisfying the targeted repertoire of practice of 'being adept at the use of computer software such as Excel'. It offers a spreadsheet tutorial using Microsoft Excel. While it is aimed at secondary students or higher, it is written simply and could be useful for teachers unfamiliar with spreadsheets who wish to help students track the costs of their itineraries.
Inspirations software: Kidspiration

This is a very useful site describing a product that can be used to help students diagram ideas and use webs and concept maps. Kidspiration in particular helps students organise ideas visually. The graphic libraries are aimed at students from P-4 and are child-friendly. In addition Kidspiration provides an auditory component that will name symbols as they are chosen and read back sentences that the student has constructed. A free online demonstration is available. This would aid students in synthsising their ideas and reassembling information.

The Cruncher (Computer software). 1994. Davidson: Torrance, California.
The Cruncher is designed to help students understand spreadsheeting and its application to a variety of areas. Designed for Year 5 and upwards, this program is simple to install and easy to operate. It uses animation and sound to make a dry topic at least interesting while opening the student's eyes to a range of uses for spreadsheets in organising personal data. It would provide an excellent introduction for students who wish to use computer software to itemise expenses.
Webster's national parks of Australia (Computer software), 1998. Webster: Frenchs Forest, N.S.W.
This multimedia program provides tourist and wildlife information on Australia's national parks. It can be used for Middle to Upper primary students who wish to plan an itinerary around visiting national parks.
BARWICK, John and BARWICK, Jennifer 2001, Tourism, Echidna: Port Melbourne, Victoria.
This book discusses types of tourism including Adventure tourism, Cultural tourism, Ecotourism and Package tours. Queensland locations feature strongly. It would be useful for upper primary students selecting destinations of special interest to an exchange student.
GARD, Stephen, 1998, The making of a nation, Macmillan: South Yarra, Victoria.
This book takes a thought-provoking look at the various influences that have gone into making Australia the nation that it is today and will be helpful in helping students identify what is an 'Australian culture'.

This program looks at three popular tourist destinations: Coober Pedy, Kakadu National Park and Port Arthur. Students could find the information on wildlife, Aboriginal art and historical ruins useful for deciding on Australian destinations.
Sunlover encounter. A10805907
This promotional film is targeted at the American market but it is suitable viewing for Year 6 students selecting destinations that would appeal to an exchange student. Jack Davis is tempted to leave his mundane job and go to Queensland to experience the rural, urban and island delights and adventures.

While this is a kaleidoscopic view of what Queensland has to offer a middle-aged family man washed out by work, the sequences of the Great Barrier Reef and its environs, the outback, rainforest areas and coastal resorts are suitable viewing for Year 6 students selecting destinations that would appeal to an exchange student.
