In this TIPS (Teaching Ideas and Practices) unit, children in Year 6 deconstruct magazine and television advertisements and hortatory expositions preparatory to composing their own campaigns for the position of school leader. The activities in this unit could be adapted to cover marketing of an event.
Writing a play - Convict times
This TIPS (Teaching Ideas and Practices) unit describes, in unit plan format, strategies used with Year 5 students to write a factually correct play about 'Convict times' using knowledge acquired during a Social Studies unit about 'Life in England prior to transportation to Australia'.

Theory and practical application are clearly interlinked, facilitating teacher usage for classes from Early Childhood to Secondary. An excellent appendix details the translation of novels and picture books into scripts. Instruction is also given for their use as stimuli for improvisation, verbal collage, hot-seating, sculpting and more. It will provide ideas for student performances.

The collection is organised into sections: improvising, claps and clicks, action rhymes, two-part reading, shared reading of many parts and nonsense. The text is easy to read and directions for performance clearly indicated. Useful for teachers wishing to incorporate performance poetry into their Language education program.

This video follows members of Circus Oz on a six-week country tour. Circus Oz does not have the usual animals but a versatile team of members who are multi-skilled, combining backstage and performing roles. It shows the members performing as jugglers, acrobats, highwire artists, clowns and musicians. There is a minimal amount of dialogue; however there is plenty of movement, sound and activity.

Designed to increase student awareness of the concept of persuasion, this three-part program, a follow-up to Persuasive Language, focuses on the art of persuasion in three fields: the advertising industry, public relations and real estate sales. A representative from each group provides an insight into its use in his particular sphere and explains the persuasive skills needed to operate successfully. It includes comprehensive teachers manual. Although this video is aimed at Year 10 - 12 students the section on how a public relations officer works would be useful.

This is a practical program covering many aspects of puppets and puppet making. Gives a brief history of puppetry mentioning the Punch and Judy show. Professional puppeteers discuss their work, present workshops and are shown performing. Presents instruction on how to make a rag rod puppet. Other puppets illustrated include finger, hand, junk, muppet-style, rod, shadow, marionette and ventriloquial. Full of clearly presented ideas useful for Primary Art and craft and Secondary Theatre and drama. Includes activity sheet.

This video outlines the methods employed by advertisers to sell products. Shows, in animated form, two rather shady characters designing an advertising program to sell 'Supergoop', a breakfast cereal, to children. The advertisers try to convince the children that the cereal is good for them and will make them popular. Includes study guide.

This video is presented in segments, each of which discusses one aspect of the theatre by concentrating on experts in each particular area. Aspects include writing, directing, and rehearsing of plays; technicalities (lighting, sound); the importance of the audience; the first night and the performance season.
