Research in the department

The department strongly values research and recognises the benefits that quality research can deliver to policy, teaching, learning, vocational education, training and skills development.

Research also helps us to understand and anticipate emerging issues and challenges and the future environment in which the department will operate. The department must continue to anticipate changes that could affect its work and prepare to meet these challenges.

Given the plethora of educational programs available to schools and training institutions, information on the programs that are working as intended would benefit all. By establishing a rigorous evidence base through research, educators can focus their resources on programs that work.

The Department's Research Plan and Priorities

The Research Plan ensures the department's research activities and investments are aligned to the education and training priorities through the department's annual Research Priorities. The Research Plan sets out the principles and standards for ethical research practice, as well as processes for research investment.

Education Horizon research grants

The $1 million Education Horizon research grant scheme offers grants of up to $100,000 for year-long research in areas of strategic priority in the early childhood education and care, schooling and training sectors. Additionally, under the 'Open' category, previous Education Horizon grant recipients can apply for a further grant of up to $100,000 per year for up to two years to build on successful and collaborative Education Horizon research projects.

The 2017 grant recipients and details of their research projects have been announced. Information for the next round will be available in early 2018.

Australian Research Council Linkage partnerships

University researchers interested in partnering with the department on an Australian Research Council (ARC) linkage partnership will need to submit a proposal to the department by 25 August 2017. All proposals will be considered collectively. Further details on how to apply and the proposal template can be found on the ARC Linkage partnerships page.

Research Forums

Research Services hosts regular Research Forums that present the findings of topical and often local partnership research to departmental staff, academics and other stakeholders. Many of these forums are web conferenced to enable the presentations to be accessed by staff and stakeholders outside of south-east Queensland. These recorded presentations can be accessed and watched up to 12 months later. For further information about upcoming forums and to access recordings, visit our Research Forums page.
