Alcohol and other drugs education program

The Department of Education and Training, in conjunction with the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, has developed the Alcohol and other drugs education program.

The Alcohol and other drugs education program is available to all Queensland schools. The program supports young Queenslanders to develop a greater awareness and understanding of the impacts of alcohol and other drug use; their capacity to make responsible, safe and informed decisions and their ability to effectively manage challenging situations.

The program includes a suite of teacher guidelines and resources for each year from Years 7 to 12.

The Years 7 to 10 programs are aligned with the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education focus area of Alcohol and other drugs. The Years 11 and 12 programs are designed to be delivered as stand-alone pastoral care programs. All may be delivered as part of pastoral care.

The program is informed by the department's Drug education and intervention advice and supports the Learning and Wellbeing Framework.

External experts within the alcohol and other drug education field were consulted during the developmental process to provide research and best-practice educational approaches.

Specialised resources for teachers include a program guide and an overview, teacher guidelines and resources for each year level. The teaching resources are available online to state schools via the Learning Place and for non-state schools via Scootle, the National Digital Learning Resources Network managed by Education Services Australia.

Teacher guidelines and resources for the Alcohol and other drugs education program (Years 7 to 12) are now available for use in schools.

Resources for parents of Year 7, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 students are also available. These resources inform parents of the learning their child is undertaking as part of the Alcohol and other drugs education program and support parents to reinforce this learning at home.
