Education Queensland Arts Education programs and initiatives

Listed below are a variety of arts education programs and initiatives that are managed by the Arts Team, Curriculum Division, Education Queensland.

Creative Generation Excellence Awards for MOST (Instrumental Music)
MOST is a biennial 12-day intensive residential extension program for approx 77 musically outstanding students from Queensland state secondary schools to work with conductors and tutors who are eminent musicians recognised as leaders in their respective fields. MOST was initiated in 1983 to provide gifted and talented music students an opportunity to develop and extend their music making skills in preparation for tertiary entrance and beyond.

Fanfare
Fanfare is a biennial statewide festival of bands and orchestras from Queensland state schools aimed at promoting excellence in ensemble performance and offering students and teachers of ensembles the experience of being adjudicated and to perform in a music festival with students and teachers from other state schools. It showcases the exciting music making that is occurring in school ensembles across the state. Fanfare was initiated in 1985 to foster the development and highlight the achievements of school-based ensembles in the instrumental music program.

Instrumental Music Program
The instrumental music program was initiated in Queensland primary and secondary schools in 1971 and since then has continued to expand and develop.

The Queensland Instrumental Music Program is a comprehensive tuition program in which students learn orchestral or band instruments in small groups and larger ensembles. Students have a minimum of two contact periods per week, one in the small group instrumental lesson and at least one in an ensemble rehearsal.

Instrumental Music Instructors are employees of Education Queensland and teach over 50,000 students in almost 800 state primary and secondary schools. There are over 400 (311 full time equivalent) instructors employed in Queensland State Schools.

Maryborough Music Conference External Link
This biennial conference organised by Education Queensland is Australia 's premier music education conference providing 500 primary, secondary and instrumental music teachers with professional development by state, national and international presenters.

Primary Specialist Music program
Music education is mandatory and a part of the core curriculum in Queensland primary schools and approximately 87% of primary school students attend schools serviced by specialist classroom music teachers who deliver programs well beyond the Essentials. Approximately 550 (480 full time equivalent) primary music specialist teachers are employed to work in state schools.

Primary music teachers teach class music to students in Years P - 7. Involvement in and leadership of co-curricular activities including choirs and instrumental ensembles is part of the music teacher's role.
