On 10 March 2009, the Premier announced a number of initiatives to improve the literacy and numeracy achievements for Queensland students.
One particular commitment referred to the provision of up to $12.25million per year for the next three years to the Years 3 and 5 Intensive Teaching initiative. This initiative will provide between 10 and 20 hours of intensive teaching for those Years 3 and 5 students not meeting National minimum standards in either literacy or numeracy.
Specifically, these funds are to be used for the employment of additional teachers who will contribute to the provision of intensive teaching by supporting school literacy and numeracy intervention programs through one-to-one, small group and co-teaching strategies.
This initiative will replace the previous government's Upper Primary Literacy Grant (UPLG) initiative which will conclude at the end of Semester 1, 2010.
