LOTE and ICT
In an era of increasing global connectedness, learning a LOTE means that students must be able to use information communication technology (ICT) effectively to communicate and transfer knowledge across languages and cultures.
It is vital that ICTs be integrated into the LOTE teacher's repertoire of strategies and into the student's array of skills to meet the National ICTs agenda and the requirements with the Essential Learning Statements for LOTE.
The Education Queensland Smart Classrooms initiative provides a broad range of support and programs for teachers to incorporate ICTs productively in their programs.
LOTE offers multiple opportunities for integration of ICT into learning.
LOTE teachers can use ICT to help students:
- read, understand and manipulate texts, sounds and images in authentic materials and relevant resources from the target country;
- practise interactive and communicative skills;
- process data and information in meaningful tasks and authentic contexts;
- research their own culture and the target culture;
- network ideas, projects and resources;
- build personal relationships with students/sister schools in the target country.
Suggestions for using ICT in the LOTE Classroom
LOTE teachers should articulate their own objectives to ensure that ICT is actually enhancing students' language acquisition and intercultural understanding.
