Languages

What is the study of languages?

Language studies focus on developing language proficiency and promote intercultural understanding. Studying a language better equips students to engage with others and participate fully in an increasingly globalised world.

The languages taught Rich text format document 84k in a school are determined by the school principal in collaboration with the school community, and in response to student needs.

Intercultural investigations (IcIs) is a subject designed to be taught as a precursor or alternative to language for students in Years 1-5.

From 2012 the study of a language is mandatory for all students in Years 6, 7 and 8.

Australian Curriculum for languages

The Australian Curriculum will replace the Queensland curriculum as it becomes available.

Languages will be part of Phase 2 of the Australian Curriculum, which is anticipated to become available from 2014.
