Mandatory languages in Years 6, 7 and 8

Young people need an education that equips them to participate in and engage with an increasingly globalised world. Learning languages provides many benefits to students, including:

Implementing mandatory language studies for Years 6, 7 and 8

All state schools are required to deliver language studies to their Year 6, 7 and 8 students from January 2012.

Languages taught

The school principal, in collaboration with the school community and in response to student needs, will determine the languages taught in Years 6, 7 and 8 Rich text format document 84k.

Exemptions

Exemptions from mandatory language studies Rich text format document 52k may only be granted in exceptional circumstances where it is in an individual student's best interest to undertake an alternative learning program. Principals, in consultation with parents and teachers, will approve applications for exemption Adobe PDF document 90k and keep a record of student exemptions.
