What is mathematics?

Mathematics is the study of numbers, data, space and shapes using a sophisticated and abstract system that involves mathematical processes, thinking, rules and symbols.

Studying mathematics helps students to develop a unique and powerful way of investigating patterns, order, generality and uncertainty.

What does mathematics mean for students?

For mathematics to make sense to students they need to know about it, know how to do it, and know why, when and where to use it.

Australian Curriculum for mathematics

The Australian Curriculum will replace the Queensland curriculum as it becomes available.

Mathematics is part of Phase 1 of the Australian Curriculum.

Education Queensland is working with the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) and the other schooling sectors on a shared plan for implementing the Australian Curriculum for mathematics for Years Prep (K) to 10.
