Schools are invited to participate in the annual World's Poultry Science Association Education Competition.
The competition aims to increase young Australian's knowledge of all aspects of poultry production, practices and products, and to showcase industry careers by involving school students in a science-based project.
Students:
The project is completed during the school year. Students develop and undertake a simple research trial, do a literature review, write a report and produce a poster.
Birds are supplied for the trial through the competition co-ordinator. A resource pack, which includes timelines, guidelines for report and poster preparation, information sources and ideas for a trial, is provided.
Each school submits their top two reports and associated posters. Towards the end of the year, schools are invited to attend and display their posters at an awards presentation and industry information day. State winners compete for a national prize.
Since the project commenced in 2000, approximately 70% of Queensland's agricultural schools have participated and the competition has expanded nationally.
The project, now in its 12th year, is run jointly by the Queensland Government's Agri-Science group in the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (which incorporates the previous Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries), the World Poultry Science Association (WSPA) Queensland sub branch, the Australian Poultry Co-cooperative Research Centre and the Poultry Industry.
