Science Education Strategy 2006-2009

The major focus of the Science Education Strategy 2006-2009 is the provision of targeted high quality professional development for primary and secondary teachers of science. This is being approached in four ways:

Working with university partners
Six Science Centres of Innovation and Professional Practice (SCIPPS) have been established to facilitate professional development for teachers, principals and school curriculum leaders in collaboration with university partners.

Working with industry
Four Senior Science Officers have been appointed to liaise with industry and research organisations to providereal life science experiences for students and teachers.

Primary Connections
The Primary Connections program promotes a 'hands-on' investigative approach to the teaching of science in primary schools, and supports teachers with the implementation of the Years 1-10 Science Syllabus.

Recognition and sharing
The Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in Science and Science Education is an annual awards program that recognises innovation and good practice in science education. An annual conference provides an opportunity for schools and teachers all over Queensland to share their great ideas and activities.

Sharing Practice Conferences will be organised to enable teachers to share and reflect upon curriculum materials, innovations and ideas that will enhance student learning opportunities.
