The Rich Tasks are curriculum organisers that can be used to effectively implement the QCAR Framework.
Rich Tasks are one of three conceptual pivots of the New Basics Framework.
They are specific activities that students 'do' that have real-world value and application. They are designed and built from the New Basics categories - four clusters of practices that are essential for negotiating the complex worlds in which students will live and work.
Within the Framework, the Rich Tasks support both curriculum planning and student assessment based on demonstration. They call on students to engage in practices that are intellectually demanding, relevant and credible to the community, and oriented to the future.
Many schools in Queensland organise their years 1-9 curriculum, teaching and assessment around the New Basics framework. Other schools, while not identifying as New Basics schools, see benefits in incorporating one or more Rich Tasks or tasks they have developed using the Rich Task Blueprints into their curriculum, assessing them against common standards and participating in social moderation to facilitate comparability of reported results.
The Rich Tasks and Blueprints and their grading masters along with up-to-date information for schools enacting Rich Tasks or Blueprints and details of the New Basics framework and its theoretical and research foundations can be accessed through The New Basics Project.
