Curriculum Standards and Moderation

Friday 13 June, 2008, Gold Coast North
The third Institute examined the role of leading for curriculum change in the context of QCAR. How do the aspects of curriculum planning, assessment, standards, reporting and moderation align? The four presentations were led by Dr Thelma Perso, Executive Director of Curriculum Division.

Dr Thelma Perso opens this CAPA professional development series by overviewing the forthcoming draft P-12 Curriculum Framework as a context to explore aspects of assessment, standards, moderation and reporting within the QCAR framework. The elements of the Framework are outlined including the draft policy, guidelines and expectations for curriculum in Queensland state schools.

In the second session, Dr Thelma Perso presents information and guidelines for reporting student achievement. The implications for students in the various phases of learning and for students with diverse learning needs are discussed. Also, implications for reporting the what students learn as well as how well they have learned it are explained.

The third session examines the role of standards and moderation in the alignment message of QCAR. Thelma also describes the role of comprehensive and valid assessment practices in enabling teachers to make judgements about student performance.

The Scope and Sequence Years 1-9 document unpacks or scaffolds the QCAR Essential Learnings and supports teachers to understand the Intended Curriculum. This presentation reinforces the messages of other sections and discusses some ideas on how to use this resource.

Curriculum Leadership in Small Schools - A Big Issue

Friday 7 December 2007, Ipswich
The second Institute focused on the challenges of curriculum leadership for small school principals. In the first address Mark Campling (Principal - North Lakes State College) and Tony McGruther (Past-President, QASSP) shared their experiences and ideas to support small school principals.

Lynne Walsh (Director - QCAR Implementation) followed with a presentation on curriculum leadership in relation to QCAR implementation.

Leading for Literacy Outcomes

Wednesday 2 May 2007, Brisbane North
The first Institute had as its focus the role of the Principal's curriculum leadership in influencing literacy outcomes. The agenda included a keynote address from Lesley Englert, Assistant Director-General Curriculum and opportunities to explore key ideas and issues through discussion groups.
