Project activities can be described as four overlapping and sequential inquiries.
Inquiry 1 is a critical review of the Australian and international literature on previous research, and on policies and practices in effective interventions in literacy and numeracy.
Inquiry 2 is a mapping and evaluation of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of current provisions for interventions in literacy and numeracy, including perspectives from sector leaders, principals, learning support teachers and other specialist personnel, and professional and parent organisations.
Inquiry 3 is an analysis of existing sector, school and student data from 2000 to 2006, including data from the Year 2 Net, Reading Recovery, and the Years 3, 5 and 7 Literacy and Numeracy Tests.
Inquiry 4 is an analysis and evaluation of intervention practices and their effects in selected school case study sites.
The Australian Government is funding the research under the States Grants (Primary and Secondary Education Assistance) Act 2000.
