Inquiry 1: A critical review of the literature

The literature review examines relevant international and Australian studies, including the recent DETYA/DEST-commissioned studies into literacy and numeracy achievement of students with learning difficulties.

The literature review is presented in four main sections.

Section 1 sets the scene with an exploration of the policy directions and research studies in Australia relating to literacy and numeracy support for students with learning difficulties followed by an investigation of policy and practice at a state level.

The approach taken in Sections 2 and 3 was to investigate effective provision on two fronts:

The final section details the outcomes of these studies documenting some similarities in findings.

The Australian Government is funding the research under the States Grants (Primary and Secondary Education Assistance) Act 2000.
