Learning Development Centres (Literacy)

Under the Literate Futures initiative, 20 Learning and Development Centres (Literacy) were established in Queensland for the calendar years 2001-2004. Through corporate sponsorship from BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance Coal Operations Pty Ltd, an additional LDC (Literacy) was established in Dysart for years 2003-2005. They are centres for professional sharing and learning of excellence in literacy teaching and practices to improve student learning outcomes in literacy. Literacy and Numeracy Week

National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) is an Australian Government initiative in its sixth year, run in collaboration with State and Territory Governments. It aims to:

NLNW activities in Queensland support the key elements of the National Literacy and Numeracy Plan by providing professional development for teachers through conferences that share best practice and innovation. Partners for Success

Partners for Success is Education Queensland's key strategy for the continuous improvement of education and employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Education Queensland. The strategy, initially trialled in 38 Queensland state schools, has been reinvigorated and extended to include all state schools in Queensland.

The Partners For Success Action Plan 2003-2005 Executive Summary and Partners For Success School Information Kit 2003-2004 outline a three-year implementation strategy. The Executive Summary and School Information Kit present priority action areas to drive and deliver improvement, key targets to measure progress, information to help schools address Indigenous education issues locally, school planning processes and strategies for celebrating and sharing success.

QSA Test Program

The Office of the Queensland Studies Authority (QSA) manages the Queensland Years 3, 5 and 7 Tests. The scope of the Tests covers aspects of literacy and numeracy in standard Australian English and allows reporting against the Queensland curriculum and approved national benchmark standards. It does not cover all aspects of literacy and numeracy.

The context of the selected test items relate to aspects of literacy and numeracy across the key learning areas, and items assess across the range of student abilities. For further information follow the prompts on the QSA website.

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is a highly successful early literacy intervention program that provides intensive, individual help for students having difficulties in learning to read and write as identified through analysis of Year 2 Diagnostic Net data. Through daily individual lessons students achieving at very low levels are helped to make rapid progress, catching up to their classmates in a surprisingly short period of time. The impressive results are achieved through rigorous quality assurance requirement at the program 's three levels of personnel: trainer of tutors, tutors and teachers. At the teacher level, Reading Recovery is recognised internationally as one of the most successful models of teacher professional development.

Year 2 Net

The Year 2 Diagnostic Net is a process of assessment and intervention developed by the Queensland Studies Authority to support children's literacy and numeracy development during the early years of schooling in Queensland. It identifies and provides additional support for those children who are experiencing difficulties in literacy and numeracy.

The Year 2 Diagnostic Net involves a four-step process in which Years 1, 2 and 3 teachers:

In Education Queensland schools, data from the moderated teacher judgments is collated in mid-year 2 and reported at a school and system level. Many schools in other systems in Queensland also utilise the Year 2 Net, and some parts of those systems also collect and analyse this data at mid-Year 2 level.
