When contacting the local council to determine what support services or resources
are available, consider the following steps:
- Telephone to determine if a contact person is available - for example,
an education officer.
- Collect information on the programs and types of talks or visits that are
available and the steps the school should take to book a talk or visit.
- Offer to provide a list of outcomes or an overview of the unit being developed
so that the presenters can design the talk or visit to meet the students'
- Speak with the presenter to find out if any technical terms or mathematical
concepts will be used and check that students' have the necessary literacy
and numeracy skills.
Setting up a reference group or partnership
with representatives from the school and council can help to ensure that
ongoing relationships are effective. As new curriculum is developed, it may
be necessary for networks of teachers
