Since 1995, secondary schools in the Redland Shire have been able to send student representatives to a Junior Council where local issues are discussed and referred to the Redland Shire Council. Following the success of this program, the principals in the area agreed to network to establish the Redland Shire Children's Voice Council to allow primary students to meet and provide input to the Junior Council.
The principals submitted a joint application for funding through the Discovering Democracy grants program. They employed a consultant to run a number of workshops for principals, teacher-librarians, council staff and Years 4/5 and Years 6/7 teachers.
The workshops raised awareness of the Discovering Democracy materials, promoted the Council's Young Citizens Program, which was already being accessed by schools, and identified links with emerging curriculum. The workshops also provided opportunities for teachers to share ideas on developing units of work that link to the local government services.
The participants evaluated the workshops to ensure that future events met their needs.
