Central to the EQ curriculum reform agenda is the requirement that all schools have in place a strategy for action to improve students' literacy learning. Reading and the teaching of reading are major foci of this literacy strategy. To support schools' engagement in whole-school literacy planning, twenty Learning and Development Centres (LDCs) (Literacy) were established in 2001 and the Literate Futures Project was established. The LDCs were set up to provide teachers throughout Queensland with learning and development opportunities in literacy, and to trial resources produced and published by the Literate Futures Project team.
The first of these, Literate Futures: Whole-school Literacy Planning Guidelines, delivered in Term 1, 2002, is designed to support all Education Queensland schools in planning to address key issues in literacy and to develop a whole-school literacy strategy. Materials produced by the Literate Futures Project team are designed to:
help teachers reflect on and clarify their own, and their colleagues', knowledge, understanding and current teaching practices in literacy, especially reading and the teaching of reading
promote professional discussions
provide professional upskilling in response to professional development needs.
As schools devise their strategy for improving literacy outcomes they will need to address reading and the teaching of reading. Providing effective learning and development opportunities for staff on the teaching of reading is an important part of each school's literacy strategy. To support schools addressing the teaching of reading, Education Queensland's Literate Futures Project has developed a range of resources. Ongoing support for the implementation of these resources will be provided through this site.
