This activity is designed for students at the upper primary or lower secondary levels. It focuses on the United Nations (UN) document 'Declaration of the Rights of the Child'.

Responsibilities and Rights Making Civic Decision — Middle Secondary

Working in small groups, students investigate concepts related to social and economic decision-making. They define issues for some different groups within Australia, then assign either government or individual responsibility for each issue.

Social Values and Concerns - Upper Primary, Lower Secondary

The values and concerns that people have affect thoughts and actions. Laws, human rights and government policies are all influenced by values and concerns.

What social values and concerns are important in your community? In this research activity you can find out what people in your school and community think about some issues. Then you can compare your results with those from a published study. This research can be done individually or as a class activity.
Teaching Democratic Values - Upper Primary, Lower Secondary

'Teaching Democratic Values' is a unit of work for upper primary and lower secondary students. It uses extracts from the Australian Readers Discovering Democracy collections to focus on democratic values and principles such as freedom, responsibility, justice, respect for the land, leadership qualities, personal values and qualities, and tolerance, inclusion and diversity. Teaching and learning activities are designed to:
- explore the meanings of particular values in the text
- discuss and reflect on values dilemmas
- apply these values to other situations and contexts
- reflect on these values in relation to students' own lives.
