More than 220 school classrooms in the hottest and most humid parts of Queensland are being air-conditioned this year as part of the $13.2 million Cooler Schools program. This brings the Government's financial commitment to the program to $153 million since 1998.
More than 3500 classrooms in 390 state schools have already been air-conditioned through the Cooler Schools program.
The Cooler Schools zone extends from the Torres Strait in the north, to Gladstone in the south, Biloela, Rockhampton and Theodore, and west to the Great Dividing Range.
The program assists school communities by subsidising the costs to install air-conditioning in schools, in areas that experience high temperatures and high humidity.
The subsidy assistance for this Round 6 of the program was broadened to support schools with limited fund-raising capabilities. The subsidy varied from school to school, depending on socio-economic needs and student enrolment numbers. Some schools were eligible for contributions up to $10 for every $1 raised.
