Engaging the community

The community can play a significant role in helping schools improve their attendance. Chambers of Commerce, shopping centres, local government, local police, railway and bus stations, small businesses, libraries and agencies such as the local Police Citizens' Youth Club are all in a position to influence the culture of the community regarding student attendance at school.

Schools can work in partnership with their communities by:

• using community agencies and organisations to promote the reasons why students should be attending school
• developing protocols with local business and shopping centres to manage students who are on their premises during school time
• improving communication between school, home and the community
• displaying Every Day Counts posters in community venues
• providing articles for the local newspaper on the importance of students attending school every day.
