Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS)

In Class Tuition

Purpose:

ITAS is for the purpose of providing supplementary tutorial assistance to improve educational outcomes of Indigenous students.

For ITAS In-class Tuition, it is to improve English literacy and numeracy attainment of Indigenous school students who have not met the Years 3, 5 and 7 benchmarks or who are at risk of not meeting the benchmarks.

Expenditure Guidelines

ITAS funds are to be used to implement tutorial arrangements to improve literacy and numeracy attainment by Indigenous students. Further information about this program is provided in the ITAS In-Class Tuition Accountability Guidelines (refer Policy Reference below).

Tutoring programs are to be delivered during the calendar year to maximise the benefits to students currently enrolled. Schools must plan to expend all funds within the calendar year.

Duration of Program

2005-2008 Quadriennium

Allocation of Funds

For ITAS In-class Tuition, the criteria that determine the allocation include: number of Indigenous students who did not meet the Years 3, 5 and 7 benchmarks in the previous year; Remoteness of each school; and an assumption of 50% Individual Tuition and 50% Group Tuition.

Allocations will vary each year depending upon the actual number of students not meeting Years 3, 5 and 7 benchmarks and the level of funds available for distribution.

Allocations are based on the same criteria used by the Australian Government to determine funding for the Department of Education, Training and The Arts.
