The Indigenous Rural and Remote Project was a Commonwealth funded project which was established to focus on the needs of students in rural and remote settings across the three educational sectors (Education Queensland, Catholic Education Commission and Independent Schools, Queensland)
The first phase of the project targeted five schools in Ingham and Palm Island and was led by a Steering Committee including representatives from the three educational sectors and local community organisations.
The project was coordinated by the Indigenous Education Unit of the Townsville Catholic Education Office.
The second phase of the project targeted the schools within and surrounding Woorabinda. The focus of the project was for participating schools to develop a comprehensive drug education curriculum program and provide parent education.
The principals of seven schools within Woorabinda and surrounding districts and the QSDES Project Officers came together in Woorabinda to develop their school action plans, discuss the Principles for school drug education
and review Indigenous drug education resources.
The school projects were complemented by coordinated community action, with a range of key stakeholders also coming together to discuss drug education and wellbeing promotion within the community.
