Why should a staff member complete the 3 day course?
Schools should consider this training course for the following reasons:
- Size - Larger schools with more than 50 staff are considered difficult to manage for a WHSO. Additional trained staff will assist the WHSO perform their role and improve the compliance level
- Complexity - Higher risks areas such as special education units and secondary practical areas all would benefit from having an internal staff member with the skills and knowledge gained through attending the course.
- Succession Planning - retirements, transfers, resignations and promotions
- Smaller schools without a WHSO would benefit from having a staff member with the skills and knowledge gained through attending the course.
- Small school Principals and other administrative staff will find the course will assist in their management of health and safety issues.
- All participants will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become an integral part of the effective management of workplace health and safety
- The course will also assist the participant to effectively carry out their own duties and develop an appropriate attitude towards workplace health and safety.
- Elected WH&S Representative will attain accreditation the approved course "Course in Functioning as a Workplace Health and Safety Representative - 30630QLD".
The trainers delivering the course are skilled EQ consultants whose practical experience in schools ensures that
- Practical skills and knowledge required to improve safety in schools are developed
- Issues relevant to participant's schools are dealt with at the course
- School relevant resources are given to participants
- Suggested solutions to the many issues confronted by schools are practical and realistic
- The course is interesting and engaging.
Course content
- How legislation impacts on schools
- Achieving resolution of WH&S issues through consultative, communication and negotiating skills
- Identifying hazards and controlling risks in a school environment
- Inspections and the Annual Assessment
- Improving safety in schools by reviewing and investigating workplace incidents and 'near misses'
- Applying the correct process for the issuing of Provisional Improvement Notices (applicable to those participants who have been elected as a WH&S Representative by their co-workers)
Course costs
The course cost including all resources and catering for the first participant from a school is $430. The training fee is reduced by 15% for all subsequent participants from the same school.
