Department of Education and Training (DET) health study

In 2005, the University of Queensland conducted a health survey of DET staff. The survey attracted over 14,000 participants representing about 26% of the total DET staff. Key findings of the health survey included:

• The overall health of DET staff is similar to the Australian reference sample, with over 90% of participating DEA staff identifying their health as being in the 'good to excellent' range.
• DET staff were representative of Australian populations norms for self-reported hypertension, heart disease and mental health (anxiety and depression).
• DET staff are less likely (than the reference sample) to have high cholesterol, or to be obese.
• More DET staff report having skin cancers (18.5%) than either the Queensland (14%), or Australian (10%) reference samples.
• Slightly more DET staff report having arthritis, rheumatism, osteoporosis, and headaches (including migraines).
