Equipment and Machinery
Equipment and Machinery also includes tools, implements, pressure vessels, appliances, individual parts or components and personal protective equipment. Schools need to consider all areas where equipment and machinery would be utilised including general school maintenance and curriculum activities. In managing the use and storage of equipment schools should establish processes that address the following:
- Prior to the purchase of new equipment, have health and safety issues been considered?
- Has the right equipment been provided for the task?
- Is there a process to inspect, maintain and service items as per the manufactures requirements? (check the Owners Manual).
- Are the operators of equipment trained and adequate supervision provided where needed?
- Are operators of equipment provided with safe operating procedures that are regularly reviewed?
- Are manufacturer's instructions and operator manuals available and followed when using equipment?
- Are requirements for PPE followed?
- Have risks associated with plant and equipment been identified, assessed and controlled?
- Is equipment stored and secured when not in use?
- Does the school keep records of the servicing, maintenance or modifications for each item of equipment?
