Becoming a teacher is a significant commitment and there are a number of different pathways that are available to people wishing to commence a teaching career. These pathways enable individuals at different stages of their lives to build on their interests, qualifications, experience and knowledge.
To be eligible for employment in both state and non-state Queensland schools, teachers must be registered with the Queensland College of Teachers.
Gaining teacher registration is an important landmark in a teacher's career. It means the teacher has met the professional standards for entry into the profession in Queensland, which includes qualifications and suitability to teach requirements.
There are a wide range of qualifications that can lead to eligibility for teacher registration. These programs are generally referred to as initial teacher education programs.
Higher Education Institutions throughout Queensland offer initial teacher education programs which have been approved by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), to ensure graduates of these programs are eligible to apply for teacher registration.
Initial teacher education programs include:
People who have a vocational qualification, such as a trade, may be eligible for credit towards an approved undergraduate initial teacher education degree, for relevant vocational studies, professional experience and training, from a Higher Education Institution.
A list of approved initial teacher education programs is available on the QCT website.
Initial teacher education programs undertaken in other Australian states and territories may also be acceptable for teacher registration in Queensland. Advice on suitable preservice teacher education programs is available by contacting the QCT .
Information about entry requirements and application processes for initial teacher education programs is available from the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre or from individual Higher Education Institutions.
