Becoming a teacher

There are a number of key steps to becoming a teacher for both school leavers and those wishing to change to a career in teaching.

Do well at secondary school. Choose subjects that will help you in the area you want to teach. Your school careers counsellor should be able to assist you with your subject selections.

Decide what age group and subject areas you would like to teach.

Go to university and study a degree that will give you qualifications to become a teacher. You will need to do well in both the academic components and practice teaching components of the qualification.

When you have completed your degree, apply for teacher registration with the Queensland College of Teachers External Link. Teacher registration ensures that only suitable and qualified people are employed as teachers in Queensland.
