Building the Education Revolution Element 1: Primary Schools for the 21st Century

This element of the Australian Government's Building the Education Revolution initiative is providing funding for new facilities and refurbishments in Queensland primary schools, P-12 and special schools.

Funding

Funds have been allocated on the basis of the audited February 2009 full-time equivalent (FTE) enrolment data.

Indicative funding caps provided by the Australian Government are as follows:

School size

The indicative funding caps provided by the Australian Government are the maximum allowable funding for each school under the Australian Government 's Building the Education Revolution Guidelines External Link Adobe PDF document. They are inclusive of all professional costs and contingencies.

Eligible projects

Under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century, funding is being provided for (in order of priority):

  1. construction of new libraries
  2. construction of new multipurpose halls
  3. construction of new classrooms, replacement of demountables or other buildings
  4. refurbishment of existing facilities
  5. early learning centres.

Design solutions for Primary Schools for the 21st Century

To expedite the planning and design phase of the Primary Schools for the 21st Century element of the BER program, a number of design templates have been developed by the Queensland Department of Education and Training. The templates are based on current best practice in our state schools as required by the Australian Government.

Nomination and submission process for Primary Schools for the 21st Century

The Department identified a number of eligible projects which has informed the first round of submissions to the Australian Government. Information for this first round was based on existing asset information and information received from primary schools in response to other capital works programs.

Eligible primary schools, P-12 and special schools not contacted in the initial round of consultation were required to submit their nomination online from 6 April. Principals received further details of the online nomination process via email on this date.

Site visits have been undertaken with principals and P&C Associations about proposed capital works solutions and to progress proposed solutions.

All project nominations to the Department of Education and Training have now closed.
