Design solutions for Queensland's Primary Schools for the 21st Century

To ensure the economic benefits and job creation from the Australian Government's Building the Education Revolution (BER) construction of projects under the Primary Schools for the 21st Century element of BER need to begin as soon as possible.

To expedite the planning and design phase, a number of design templates have been developed by the Queensland Department of Education and Training based on current best practice in our state schools and as required by the Australian Government.

These designs are based on departmental standards of functionality, flexibility, minimum area requirements, maintenance costs, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Priority 1 - Library

The following links are to minimum design templates for schools of a particular size.

School size is up to 100 FTEs

School size is 101 to 400 FTEs

School size is over 400 FTEs

Optional solution for large schools

Option - Science Innovation and Technology Centre

An optional science space can be added to the library. This facility is designed to support the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) initiative. These options range from $250,000 to $500,000 depending on requirements for your school. For information on Science Innovation and Technology Centre options, please contact your Regional Facilities Manager or BER Regional Adviser.

Priority 2 - Multi-purpose hall / covered area options

After addressing the library as first priority, schools may choose from any of the multi-purpose halls and covered areas, depending upon available funding.

Solution 1 - Total floor area: 310 square metres

Solution 2 - Total floor area: 500 square metres

Solution 3 - Total floor area: 1093 square metres

Solution 4 - Total floor area: 508 square metres

When developing a project nomination for a hall, the size and functional areas of the hall should be considered in line with the requirements of your school and local community's needs.

Priority 3 - Other Building options

After addressing both the library and multi-purpose hall priorities, schools may choose to build another new building. Departmental standards will apply. Please discuss with your Regional Facilities Manager or BER Regional Advisor.

Priority 4 - Refurbishment options

This will be addressed on a case by case basis. Departmental standards will apply. Please discuss with your Regional Facilities Manager BER Regional Advisor.

Priority 5 - Early Learning Centre options

This will be addressed on a case by case basis. Departmental standards will apply. Please discuss with your Regional Facilities Manager BER Regional Advisor.

In all cases, schools should ensure that total project costs are within indicative funding caps prior to submitting a nomination.
