Greenslopes State School turns back the pages in history

Greenslopes State School took a walk down memory lane on September 16, turning back the pages in time to welcome past and present students to celebrate the opening of the Building the Education Revolution funded resource centre.

Past student Ron Munnich, who first attended the school in 1925, reminisced about the old days along side fellow classmates Nev Sullivan and George Gee inside the school's new multi-million-dollar resource centre.

Mr Munnich said the school, which originally opened in 1890, had once only had a draw of books in each classroom for students and slate boards and chalk instead of computers and white boards.

"We all remember the blackboard, the dusters and the chalk," he said.

"I now understand why kids want to come to school these days with terrific facilities like this.

"I don't remember having a library when I was here, we just had a cupboard with a few books."

Mr Munnich has had three generations of his family enrolled at the school.

School Principal Larissa Vecchio said the school community was ecstatic about showcasing their new multi-million-dollar resource centre to previous staff members and students.

Ms Vecchio said the opening was not only a day of celebration, but a day to keep the school's history alive.

"The school has a strong belief of valuing the community," she said.

"There are generations of families who have come to this school.

"The resource centre has just been fantastic, we have been able to expand a lot of our school programs."

Greenslopes State School received $2,000,001 in funding under the primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) for the classroom and library. An additional $125,000 was provided under the national School Pride (NSP) element for minor refurbishments at the school.

The two storey resource centre features two classrooms, a media room and library.
