Architectural expertise brings Kuraby State School's BER facility to life

Kuraby State School’s multi-million-dollar Building the Education Revolution (BER) funded multipurpose hall and resource centre have been designed to create a formal, public space, utilising the natural daylight and ventilation.

When designing the facilities, Lightwave Architectural and Grindley Construction carefully considered the schools current needs as well as allowing for future alternative requirements. The relationship of the hall to the ancillary rooms, forecourt and the rest of the school allows it to function as an integral part of the school during the day and an independent performance space at night.

The multipurpose hall is nestled within a leafy street frontage, with direct access to the street and proximity to additional public facilities across the road.

Lightwave and Grindley developed a construction system to provide ample natural daylight and ventilation, through a series of tall multi-coloured narrow pivot doors between fiberglass strips. Fitted to allow the panels to be set at a variety of angles to catch and direct the breezes, they also form a changing and playful facade.

As part of the new complex the new computer lab is extruded and separated from the other ancillary rooms by an open learning area that frames the access to the adjoining kindergarten beyond. Flanked by the forecourt, the built form plays secondary role to the activity that occurs around it.

From the school function the forecourt forms the heart of the complex and provides the transition zone between the existing covered play space and the hall, kitchen, office computer lab and link to the kindergarten.

New multipurpose halls help support the Government's increased emphasis on physical activity in the school curriculum and the growth of our creative and performing arts program, while the provision of contemporary resource centers provide an environment for students to work collaboratively on innovative teaching and learning experiences.

The Queensland Government, through the Department of Education and Training, is managing the implementation of BER in Queensland state schools on behalf of the Australian Government.

The Australian Government provided $2,500,000 in funding to Kuraby State School under Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) for the resource centre and multipurpose hall. An additional $149,999 was provided under the National School Pride (NSP) element for minor refurbishments at the school.
