About Comic Chat

Each chat room has the option to change to a Comic Chat format. The chat moderator (teacher) can activate this feature through the 'options menu' in the chat room. Once activated, participants need to select the Comic Chat icon in the bottom right of their chat window.

What is Comic Chat?

Comic Chat looks like a comic strip. Participants choose a character and whatever they type comes up in a cartoon comic strip with speech bubbles. Comic Chat is a synchronous communication tool that is motivating and enjoyable.

Comic Chat is only suitable for very small numbers of participants. The best Comic Chats occur when there are between 2-5 participants as each person has their own unique character. Plan your Comic Chat well and it will be an enjoyable success.

Participants can choose from a bank of comic characters or they can create their own characters. If you create your own character, you must follow the character specifications, as the Comic Chat room will only accept characters in the required format.

Why use Comic Chat?

Comics have a wide appeal to children and adults. Chats can be printed and put into class books to share with others. The visual elements of comics and the use of smaller chunks support literacy development. Students who are reluctant readers and/or writers enjoy the freedom and fun of the comic environment as they are guided to write stories based on their character’s emotion and background (setting).

Comic Chat can be used for the following reasons:

  • Improve reading and writing skills
  • Teach the comic strip genre
  • School or class newsletters
  • LOTE activities
  • Scaffolding story writing
  • Improve any writing experience
  • Funky meetings
  • Chats with experts
