What is iConnect?

iConnect is the Learning Place's web conferencing system. It provides an online learning environment for staff and students to communicate securely, in real time.

iConnect features a range of collaborative tools including:

  • shared whiteboard spaces
  • an application-sharing program
  • a text chat facility
  • Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP)
  • multimedia playback
  • file transfer
  • use of webcams
  • polls and quiz functionality.

Quick start

Go to iConnect and select your web conferencing session.

Follow the How to guide to join a conference.

Available through the Learning Place, iConnect supports student learning, professional development and training activities.

Who can participate?

Anyone can participate in a web conference if they have been invited by a moderator who will provide the session password to participants. The Learning Place also features regular web conferencing sessions on how to use eLearning environments to support teaching and learning.

Web conferencing is ideal for:

  • students from Schools of Distance Education and the Virtual School Service
  • students in the i-Support program
  • students participating in collaborative projects (global and local), extension programs, work with external organisations, interschool projects and expert discussions
  • departmental staff in professional development and training programs
  • departmental staff working on moderation activities
  • meetings and conference attendees.

How do I get started?

To join a conference as participant, follow the How to guide.

How do I become a web conferencing moderator?

To become a moderator, you need to complete the online iConnect web conferencing course.

This self paced online course contains four modules to help you create interactive content, moderate online and effectively manage your conferencing sessions. The course culminates in a 30-minute live session with a Learning Place team member who will help you to demonstrate your conferencing skills. You will then be given moderator status in the web conferencing system to create and facilitate your own sessions.

A web conferencing moderator can schedule and run web conferencing sessions. Moderators facilitate and guide participants through their session. To become a moderator, you need to be skilled in using web conferencing tools. Good moderators also use effective planning and facilitation strategies. The Learning Place's iConnect moderator training includes teaching strategies and planning techniques.
