Roles we play

People can take various roles in a forum:

The moderator

The key role of the moderator is to facilitate discussion by posting questions and discussion starters and by summarising main points along the way.

  • Decides on the purpose, topic and audience for the forum
  • Organises a starting date and a finishing date
  • Requests a forum. Teachers use the Forum request form. If it is a forum for students use the Project request form.
  • Arranges an online guest if appropriate
  • Provides background information about the guest
  • Advertises the event
  • Introduces the topic and guest
  • Password protects the discussion if necessary
  • Organises practice sessions for guest and participants where requested
  • Posts comments/questions to facilitate discussion
  • Summarises main points
  • Asks participants to clarify postings
  • Provides a final summary and closes the discussion
  • Thanks participants and guests
  • Encourages 'observers' to get involved
  • Models Chatiquette
  • Deletes inappropriate postings (daily checks are recommended)
  • Closes and archives the discussion

The participant

  • Ensures he/she can log on and access the discussion board
  • Posts messages in response to questions or comments on the discussion board
  • Begins new discussion threads or replies to existing ones
  • Makes a positive contribution to the forum
  • Uses Chatiquette

The guest

  • Ensures he/she can log on and access the discussion board
  • Posts an introductory message
  • Posts comments/questions to facilitate discussion
  • Clarifies main points or common questions
  • Provides a final summary
  • Makes a positive contribution to the forum
  • Uses Chatiquette
