Manage a list

The role of the list owner is more than managing the day-to-day administrative tasks of running a list. A good list is useful to its members. They are able to access relevant information on the topic and exchange ideas with like-minded individuals.

The list owner has a key role in facilitating these elements by encouraging members to share, ensuring all feel welcome and making sure any tensions are handled promptly and fairly.

List owners responsibilities include:

  • Making regular postings to encourage conversations.
  • Responding to other members' postings.
  • Modelling the desired behaviour of the list. For example, posting the answer to a problem to the list not just the author of the request.
  • Monitoring inappropriate communication to the list.
  • Posting regular list updates and news. For example, how to access archives or subscribe/unsubscribe.
