NAIDOC Week 4-11 July 2010

National Aboriginal Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week is an annual event that celebrates and promotes the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Discover a range of ideas and activities in the resource centre to support this week-long celebration.

• NAIDOC
  The official NAIDOC site provides information about NAIDOC Week, including details about its history, competitions and events and activities.

• Puk, wik, thayan: a toolkit to manufacture classroom celebrations during NAIDOC week
  This toolkit will provide teachers with information and resources to share and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture with their students (Years 4-10) and the wider school community.

• Indigenous studies: bush tucker
  Built around TLF digital resources, this lesson investigates traditional food gathering and its cultural significance for the Yolngu people.

• Creating a Keynote presentation and exporting it to a QuickTime movie to celebrate NAIDOC week
  Primary students undertake research on NAIDOC Week and traditional Aboriginal people and Aboriginal culture.

• Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS): online collections
  A collection of online exhibitions providing accessible information on aspects of Australia’s Indigenous history is available through this section of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) site.

• Drawing by Indigenous Australian artist Tommy McRae, 1880 - asset 2
  This is a black-and-white drawing that shows a variety of wildlife and several Indigenous Australian men engaged in hunting.

Featured resource - Reduce, re-use, recycle

Most waste can be avoided, reduced, reused and recycled. Learn how you can be more environmentally sustainable in everyday practices and explore ways to reduce, re-use and recycle.
The following list contains a sample of resources for teachers and students from the resource centre that support this theme.

• Why recycle?
  Primary students find out about the durability of plastics and environmental benefits of recycling.
• Your rubbish pile: managing waste
  Secondary students choose whether to reduce, reuse, recycle, or throw away household items such as bottles, cans, plastic bags, paper and food waste. This learning object is one in a series of three objects.

  Primary students explore where newspapers come from and go to.
• Ollie's world: an interactive sustainability resource
  This Australian website contains information, activities, movies and educational games on maintaining a sustainable living environment.
• National Recycling Week. Planet Ark
  The 'National Recycling Week' (NRW) campaign was established to encourage recycling and waste minimisation and the management of material resources among the community.
• Sustainable fashion through recycling
  This is a colour clip about My Sister's Wardrobe events, an innovative approach to recycling women's clothing as a way to reduce wasteful consumption on fashion items.
• Disposing of technology: e-waste
  This is a colour clip about disposing of electronic waste, including ways of recycling and reusing.
