File conventions

Naming files

When naming files that are to be used for delivering webpages there are conventions that have to be followed.

  • All webpages created should have the extension .html
  • Do not put spaces in the file name e.g. my holiday.html should be myholiday.html
  • Use lower case when naming your files e.g. glossary.html

File sizes

Blackboard® note:
If you are setting up a course within Blackboard, your entire site has a space of 15 Mb. The maximum size of file to be uploaded to Blackboard is 2 Mb. Keep the file size of your webpage as small as possible. The larger the file size the longer the page will take to download. The aim is to keep the file size of your webpage to about 36 Kb.

To find the file size, navigate to the folder where you have stored your file, click on the file and the file size should be displayed. This file size is only of your webpage. It does not include the file sizes of any images, documents, animations you have referenced. Any additional elements included in your webpage will only increase the webpage file size when it is displayed on the web. The more you have in your page the bigger the total file size.

HTML file sizes examples

If you have included any additional elements you will have to add their file sizes to the size of the webpage to give the total size of the page when it is displayed in a web browser.
