Images as backgrounds

You can use an image as the background for a page by adding another attribute to the <body> tag. For an image named clouds.gif, add the following attribute to the <body> tag:

background='clouds.gif' to the <body> tag, the tag would then look like this:

<body background='clouds.gif'>

Within the <body> tag you can also define the colour of your text (text), non-visited hyperlinks (link), visited hyperlinks (vlink), active hyperlink (alink), a background colour (bgcolor) and/or a background image (background).

<body background='clouds.gif' bgcolor='white' text='black' link='green' vlink='blue' alink='red'>

Accessibility:
Using background images and colour may make your page look brighter and more interesting but it may also interfere with the readability of the text.

Experiment with these body tag attributes to see what you can create.

Notes:

  • When using a small image for the background, make sure that it tiles seamlessly (the edges join neatly). Jagged tiles are a distraction for learners.
