Run through the Learning Place as part of the Children's Book Week, the event sees students from P-Year 8 complete a series of quizzes based on the Children's Book Council of Australia 2008 shortlist.

Competition organiser and Smart Classrooms Mentor for Far North Queensland Megan Harris says the event aims to get students working in a collaborative learning environment to explore the listed books in greater depth.

'Often when children are doing a reading response it's an independent, written activity. The Online Readers' Cup is a collaborative, online event which is perfectly suited to the Gen Y learner.

'I feel that some great learning will take place when student's get to the end of the quiz and get to see which answers they got right and which they got wrong.

'The wrong answers in particular will lead to discussions about what other possible answers there were and why one answer is better than the other.

As the competition continues, the participants will receive emails about how their team and others have performed, giving them a feeling of connectedness with other children in the state.'

This year teams can either sit one quiz with all of the questions combined or sit individual quizzes on each title with only a couple of questions in each. To qualify the participants need to get a minimum number of questions right out of the total with a pass mark of around 75 per cent. These teams will then progress to the semi-finals.

The three winning teams will each receive a 40 minute online chat with a leading Australian author.
